AREA RUG TREATMENTS

Appraisals

Inglis & JaDoc offer appraisals on kilims, tapestries & rugs for estate sales & insurance purposes. Our evaluator is a Certified Rug Appraiser, and has been certified as a Rug Specialist through The Association of Specialists in Cleaning and Restoration (ASCR).

There is an appraisal fee for a formal written appraisal required by insurance companies or estate legalities. We are more than happy to give verbal evaluations along with rug origin and approximate age when servicing your rugs at no charge.

These evaluations are valid in court and, for a small additional fee, can be accompanied by a court appearance by our representative, if necessary.

Urine, Mold & Odour Treatments

Oriental rugs are at a disadvantage for odour removal due to their porosity, delicacy and the natural tendency of wool, silk & cotton to be highly absorbent.

Often there are odours found in rugs that require specialized approaches to removal that a general cleaning simply cannot remove. This time-consuming process cannot guarantee complete odour removal in all circumstances but has proven to be very effective at reducing odours to acceptable levels.

It is necessary to mention that urine & mold discolouration can cause permanent discolouration due to the infiltration of existing dyes. This process is designed specifically for the reduction of odours and further work may be required to restore the lost or tinted colours.

Moth Extermination

Wool moths can infest any wool or animal fibre if it is soiled, in dark or undisturbed areas, or not checked regularly. The most susceptible pieces are those hanging on walls, stored without protection in dark areas, or placed with furniture covering them so that they cannot be properly vacuumed or inspected. Other damaging insects include beetles and silverfish.

Sometimes prevention isn't enough and an infestation has taken place. It is highly-recommended to avoid the use of moth balls & moth crystals, which can damage fibres and dyes. Inglis & JaDoc approaches moth infestation in stages, visually documenting the areas where the damage has occurred and closely examining for the location and number of insects. After a dye & fibre test with our agent, we apply it for a guaranteed elimination of existing moths and follow with our unique deep-immersion cleaning system to ensure complete removal.

Signs of wool moth infestation include small (1/4 - 1/3 inch) beige flying moths, spider-like webbing on wool surfaces, small cocoons and/or larvae, and grazing, holes and/or tunnelling in woollens. Flying moths lay eggs on wool, hair and feather surfaces, and when these eggs hatch, the new larvae begin their most damaging life stage by grazing on the fibres. Repeated life cycles and generations will destroy large areas of a weaving.

Prevention is best regarding insect problems, and this simply requires general cleanliness, careful vacuuming, exposing through regular rotation and/or regular visual checking of stored and out-of-the-way weavings. Wool-eating moths thrive in dark and undisturbed areas, such as under furniture where vacuuming is not performed regularly while other destructive beetles and silverfish usually do damage when items are left on the floor or stored in hard-to-reach and dirty areas, such as an unfinished basement, the attic or garage.

After the initial infestation is dealt with, the holes will remain and cleaning may slightly enlarge the holes when the already loose fibres are disturbed. All is not lost; we offer a number of solutions from basic securing of the backing to prevent any further loss or physically reweaving the rug to its original state.

Colour Correction

Colour is the number one reason why people select a rug. Foreign dyes from coffee, plant food, mustard, furniture stain or mixed beverages that add unwanted colour or rugs that have been tarnished by insecticide, household bleach acne medication or urine by removing colour can be corrected.

Retouching elaborate patterns, simply darkening a faded carpet and all concerns in-between are correctible. This service is ideal for high-value rugs that have suffered an otherwise permanent accident, for adding colour to faded rugs with high-sentimental value, as in the case of family heirlooms or for retouching rugs that have exposed warp-knots to cost-effectively restore the appearance.
